Disaster Relief

The American Red provides disaster relief services to people affected by disasters 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. Through an extensive network of well-trained volunteers, the American Red Cross is able to provide for the basic needs of disaster victims.

American Red Cross is a private, non-profit organization that does not receive government funding. Disaster relief services are always provided free of charge and are made possible from generous donations of time and money from the American people.

Each year, the American Red Cross responds to more than 67,000 disasters nationwide, iEvacuee Shelterncluding residential fires (the majority of disaster responses), hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hazardous material spills, transportation accidents, explosions, and other natural and man-made disasters.

Red Cross disaster relief focuses on meeting people's immediate emergency disaster-caused needs by providing shelter, food, clothing, and health and mental health services to address basic human needs. The core of Red Cross disaster relief is the assistance given to individuals and families that enable them to resume their normal daily activities independently.

The Red Cross also helps those needing long-term recovery assistance when all other resources, including insurance benefits, community and personal resources and government assistance are not available or are inadequate. All assistance is based on verified disaster-caused needs.

The Red Cross also feeds disaster victims and emergency workers, handles inquiries from concerned family members outside the disaster area, provides blood and blood products to disaster victims, and helps those affected by disaster to access other available resources.

Disaster Training & Presentations

The Red Cross also provides practical and helpful awareness and educational information that shows the public how to save lives, reduce injuries and protect their families and homes during a disaster. Community Disaster Education presentations are available. Call 577-7603 to get more information.

All Disaster Services courses are free. Some are self-study, and most are offered in a classroom setting as well. Introduction to the Red Cross and Fulfilling Our Mission are held every month.

Other classes are offered at different times, in Sonoma and Mendocino Counties. Please take courses in your area of interest. There are 7 disaster services classes that make up the core training of members of the DAT. We offer those as a block of training 3 times a year.

You can work in Disaster Services without being a DAT member.
